Q. What distinguishes On Demand solutions from Application Service Providers?

A. On Demand solutions typically go beyond the support for a standardized shrink-wrapped product offered over the web by Application Service Providers (ASP). ASPs offer products such as Microsoft Exchange or Web hosting in standard configurations on shared hardware. ASPs allow customers to run standard software over the Internet without having to set up and support in-house servers. ASP services typically offer little value added customization, in order to keep costs down. While On Demand services are also delivered over the Internet, they are typically based on specialized software platforms designed to support large numbers of tenants, each with individual customizations of data and process. Unlike ASPs, On Demand solutions are designed to add value not only through off site infrastructure, but also through the information services they provide.
